At Severson Sheldon, our attorneys work to protect clients' work and ideas from disclosure and improper use by others. This can be accomplished in some contexts through the use of confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements. However, at times, a client’s work product can be legally protected through formal registration so that its use is exclusively reserved to the client. Our attorneys assist clients in understanding this process.
Although sometimes misunderstood, intellectual property consists of anything of commercial value that you have made through your creativity. Intellectual property includes trademarks and trade secrets; copyrighted property such as literary, musical or artistic works; and invented or discovered property such as patents, business methods or industrial processes.
There are various ways to protect your intellectual property. Some protection methods require filing an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or with the U.S. Copyright Office. At times, protection can be accomplished simply by using your intellectual property in commerce.
Knowing how to protect your intellectual property is critical in business because intellectual property can be lost if it is not properly protected. Gary Huusko, our intellectual property attorney, works regularly with our other business and commercial attorneys to assist clients as they determine 1) what type of intellectual property they have and 2) the most effect way to protect it.
Please contact Attorney Gary L. Huusko by phone at (952) 953-8846 or, if you prefer, you may contact Gary by e-mail at huuskog@seversonsheldon.com.
